Power Ball 2015: What to Expect at Excess

It’s my favourite time of year again—Power Ball! I asked a few of my favourite party people to tell me why they love Power Ball so much. So without much further ado…

Daniel Faria, Gallerist
What are you most looking forward to this Power Ball?
Powerball is always outrageous and fun. We always dance until 2 in the morning and are the last people to leave, begging the DJ not to stop. So i’m looking forward to that. Also, Jennifer Rubell, an incredible contemporary artist from the US who deals with food at social events will be doing a work with local food giants Grant Van Gameren (Bar Isabel) and Sam James (Sam James Coffee Bar). It’s impressive they were able to get Jennifer to do something in Toronto!
Favourite past Power Ball moment?
My favourite moment is definitely Keith Cole’s “Circumcision Circus” from 2010. That performance was epic with Keith being the ring leader of this fantastic characters of musclemen, drag queens and freakist talents including “the girl with the loudest scream”. And Luis Jacbo’s “Silent Disco” from 2007! That was something I had never seen or experienced before, dancing with friends with headphones on in a room where others could not hear the music. It was the ultimate clique at a party.
What are you wearing this year?
I always like to be comfortable so that I can dance until the wee hours, so this years I’m wearing a Lemaire tee and Pierre Hardy sandals I just got on a recent trip to Paris. They’re black, so fit within my uniform.

What are you most looking forward to this Power Ball?
Everything?! All the pillars are lined up and padded with excessiveness, so you just wait, the party will be so alive! However I particularly can’t wait to see Jennifer Rubell’s super special collab food performance with Toronto chef heroes Grant Van Gameren Sam James & Bertrand Alépée – I’m having a major fan girl moment! She created this performance just for Power Ball. It isn’t like she is picking up a pre-existing piece and hauling it here. Fun fact: Jennifer’s uncle is Steve Rubell, founder of Studio 54 (!!!). That’s royalty in my books.

Anita Clarke (iWantiGot) and I rolled up to Power Ball both wearing tight black body suits—her in a side-slit Mark Fast number hugging her hips and all the right parts and me in a lace onesie. It made great for dancing and making new friends. The rest of the night unfolded quite nicely.

(dug out of the Textstyles archives!)
I would love to be coy and say I’m not telling but that would be rude. I’m wearing a tulle dress made out of bacon and fried eggs. Kidding! I’m wearing one of my favourite designers, Greta Constantine! The talented Cody Alain (P1M) will be primping my hair and makeup!

What are you most looking forward to this Power Ball?
The food performance by artist Jennifer Rubell. I love food and art, so this is a match made in heaven.
Favourite past Power Ball moment?
Meeting one of my favourite fashion photographers. You might know her. Her name starts with “S” and ends with “ania”… ;-)

Nothing tight or white — a recipe for disaster when food is involved! Thankfully Sid Neigum designs a lot of loose, black clothing.
